Wrong Focus
The world is complaining about South
Africa, complaining about xenophobic attacks on foreigners, giving people swift
deaths. In our dear country Nigeria the current crisis of fuel scarcity is a
creeping grim ripper, the nation is at a point of shutdown, because even with
the hike in prices of banking operations, telecom charges, food prices,
transportation prices etc. Many of these firms would shut down in less than a
few weeks due to the stoppage in supply of imported refined petroleum products,
which would definitely lead to nation’s shutdown. The educational sector,
health sector, telecommunications sector, the mining sector, agricultural
sector, banking sector, transport sector will all crumble if the nation still
trails this path.
A lot of focus is on the stoppage of
supply of petroleum products by marketers because the federal government has
failed to meet up with the subsidy payment agreement which isn’t meant to be so.
As a nation blessed with abundance of
crude oil, why should there be fuel scarcity due to the stoppage of supply of
“imported” refined petroleum products, there are only two major reasons as to
why, Nigeria is succumbing to this, firstly is the inadequate power supply
around the nation, secondly is that no refinery in the nation is
operating. These two all boil down to
the selfishness of the leadership of the nation.
Many of our leaders or elite, go ahead to
have oil wells, oil locks refineries, outside the country for so many hideous
reasons one of which is to fattening their pockets, they know very well that
having the oil structures in the nation would need constant power supply, and
rather than working to provide adequate power for the nation they would rather
do the former.
As for that of the inadequate supply of power,
this also is due to selfishness of the leadership and elite of the nation, the
major importers of generating sets, flashlights, batteries, battery inverters,
and other power competitive goods are those benefitting from the inadequacy in
power supply.
The focus of the nation should not be on
reviving the importation of oil products and the payment of subsidy but rather
we Nigerians and our incoming leaders should focus on the reviving the power
sector and reviving the nations refineries. Even though would not agree to this
but the fuel subsidy should be removed, and the funds should be diverted to the
refineries.
We pray for a better Nigeria but prayers
alone wouldn’t transform the nation, our leaders should quit peripheral jobs
and work on the major problems of the nation.
Mr Otusanya dolapo.
